A recent study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute revealed that factors such as smoking, drinking, diet, weight, exercise, genetics, and where you reside all play a role in determining life expectancy. The study, which was part of the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, identified Pennsylvania counties with the longest life spans.
Bucks and Montgomery Counties were among the top ten counties with the highest life expectancy scores. Montgomery County ranked fourth with a score of 80.1, while Bucks, Lancaster, and Northampton counties tied for ninth place with a life expectancy of 79.3 years. This is 2.0 years better than the statewide average of 77.3.
The top-ranking counties included Centre, Chester, Union, Montgomery, Snyder, Cumberland, Pike, and Adams. Counties with lower life expectancy rates included Lehigh, Berks, and Dauphin.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), life expectancy in the United States has increased by nearly seven years over the past fifty years, from 70.8 in 1970 to 77.5 in 2022. Life expectancy measures the average number of years a person can expect to live from birth, based on mortality data and the average number of people at risk of dying during a given period.
Counties with unreliable or insufficient data were excluded from the analysis, which used mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System. Overall, the study highlights the various factors that contribute to life expectancy and the importance of addressing these factors to improve public health outcomes.
