Penn State faculty member Ben Cramer has written a new guidebook spotlighting over 50 hikes in the Pennsylvania Wilds region, to be released in late 2025. The guidebook, created through a collaboration with the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship and the Keystone Trails Association, condenses the 1,600 miles of trails in the region into more than 52 day hikes. Cramer, an experienced hiker and author of seven guidebooks, hopes to showcase the diverse ecosystems and landscapes of the PA Wilds to a wider audience.
Last summer, Cramer hiked nearly every trail in the PA Wilds to prepare for the book, which includes hikes ranging from one to nine miles. In addition to highlighting popular trails with scenic views and waterfalls, Cramer also provides information about the local ecology and landscapes. The PA Wilds Center, which provided the initial idea and funding for the book, hopes that Cramer’s guidebook will make the region more approachable and welcoming to new visitors.
The Keystone Trails Association also played a key role in the project, connecting Cramer to lead the book. KTA executive director Brook Lenker emphasized the importance of guidebooks in introducing new hikers to the hobby, as they provide essential information for safely experiencing trails. With a focus on conservation and economic development in the Pennsylvania Wilds, Cramer’s guidebook aims to inspire a greater appreciation for the region and encourage more people to explore its natural beauty through hiking.
