Rubio states that El Salvador is willing to accept deportees and US criminals

El Salvador has offered to house “dangerous criminals” from anywhere in the world deported by the United States, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During his first overseas tour, Rubio met with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to discuss this agreement. This offer extends beyond El Salvador accepting its own deported citizens, specifically targeting individuals involved in criminal gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. Bukele also suggested housing dangerous criminals who are U.S. citizens or legal residents, although it is unclear if the U.S. will take up this offer.

The purpose of this agreement is to facilitate the deportation of migrants back to their own countries, as well as establishing “third country” agreements where nations accept citizens who are not accepted by their home countries for deportation. Rubio is seeking support from countries in the region for the Trump administration’s efforts to deport large numbers of migrants. Bukele’s willingness to cooperate is seen as key in these migration efforts, as his security crackdown in El Salvador has been effective in reducing the number of Salvadorans attempting to enter the U.S. illegally.

Prison conditions in El Salvador are described as harsh and dangerous by the U.S. State Department, with concerns about overcrowding and lack of basic provisions. Bukele has offered to outsource part of the U.S. prison system by taking in convicted criminals, including U.S. citizens, for a fee. This arrangement would help sustain El Salvador’s prison system while benefiting the U.S. financially. Trump administration has increased deportations of migrants to Latin America and recently removed protection against deportation for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans in the U.S.
