Four fathers are being hailed as heroes after apprehending an active shooter at an East Texas high school band competition. The shooting took place at Pasadena Memorial High School, where a man in his mid-twenties was shot and injured by Dennis Erwin Brandl Jr. The fathers, with backgrounds in policing and the military, disarmed and subdued Brandl until law enforcement arrived. The victim, who did not know Brandl, is in stable condition and expected to recover. Brandl claimed he felt threatened and was being chased before the shooting. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is awaiting transfer to Harris County Jail.
The community has praised the fathers, known as the “Pearland Dads,” for their brave actions in protecting the students and parents at the competition. Pearland ISD Superintendent Larry Berger commended their selflessness, while Harris County Constable Mark Herman applauded their swift response. The fathers, including Abram Trevino, Adam Curow, Efrain “Polo” Castillo, and Joe Sanchez, each played a role in disarming Brandl and securing the situation. Curow, with Army experience, managed to grab the handgun and secure it behind his back to prevent any further harm.
