Homicide numbers decreased in central Pennsylvania, with the exception of Dauphin County

In 2024, counties in central Pennsylvania experienced a decrease in homicides, except for Dauphin County. Dauphin County saw a record-high number of homicides, with 26 reported for the year. This was three more than the previous year and more than double the totals of neighboring counties York and Lancaster, which both had 12 homicides each. Cumberland County, on the other hand, reported four killings in 2024, down from five in 2023.

The increase in homicides in Dauphin County was largely attributed to a spike in killings in the city of Harrisburg. This rise in violence emphasizes the need for continued efforts to address and prevent crime in the area.

Going forward, law enforcement agencies and community organizations in Dauphin County will need to work together to address the root causes of violence and implement strategies to reduce crime. This could include increased patrols in high-crime areas, community outreach initiatives, and support for at-risk individuals.

Despite the challenges faced in Dauphin County, the overall decrease in homicides in central Pennsylvania is a positive trend. By continuing to collaborate and implement effective crime prevention measures, counties in the region can work towards creating safer communities for all residents.
