Harrisburg begins new legislative session with a bang

The Pennsylvania General Assembly commenced a new legislative session on Jan. 27, with a Republican-led state Senate and a tied state House following the passing of Rep. Matt Gergely. A special election on March 25 will resolve the deadlock in the House. Until then, the fate of proposed bills, including those related to election security, remains uncertain. Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro will have to navigate working with at least one Republican-controlled chamber during the budget season, which has seen delays in recent years. School choice has emerged as a contentious issue, with Shapiro and many Republicans supporting the idea of vouchers for private school attendance, while Democrats and public school advocates argue for investment in the public school system. Shapiro is expected to present his budget priorities in February. Lawmakers will need to pass both the budget and specific bills for funding allocations. The House has scheduled session days leading up to June before a break until September, while the Senate has fewer scheduled days with a focus on June. Additional session days can be added as needed.
