Man Injured in Ski Lift Incident at Attitash Mountain Resort
BARTLETT, N.H. (AP) — A man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after falling approximately 20 feet when his ski lift chair detached at Attitash Mountain Resort on Sunday. The incident occurred around 12:15 p.m., prompting immediate response from resort and emergency personnel.
Witnesses reported that the man, who was conscious following the fall, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The New Hampshire state fire marshal’s office stated that preliminary investigations indicated a mechanical failure may have been responsible for the dislodgment of the chair from the cable. Fortunately, no other individuals were injured and all remaining passengers were evacuated safely at the top of the lift.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Flying Bear lift has been closed, as investigations by the fire marshal’s office and the Passenger Tramway Safety Board are underway. A spokesperson from Vail Resorts, the parent company of Attitash, reassured the public that routine inspections of the lifts are conducted daily.
Skiers at the resort expressed their concern regarding the incident. One eyewitness, David Gunzburger, described the scene, noting that ski patrol was seen transporting the injured man on a sled, equipped with a backboard and neck brace. He emphasized the frightening nature of the accident, describing it as "the worst possible situation."
As safety investigations continue, officials are focused on determining the causes behind the mechanical failure to prevent future incidents at the popular ski destination. The resort remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of its guests and staff amid these troubling events.
