Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has publicly challenged PETA’s call to end the tradition of pulling Punxsutawney Phil out of his burrow for Groundhog Day. In response to PETA’s offer of a vegan cake in exchange for sparing the groundhog, Shapiro defiantly tweeted, “Come and take it.” The governor, a frequent attendee of the annual ceremony, will be present at Phil’s 138th meteorological prediction on Sunday.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk criticized the tradition, stating that Phil is denied a natural life for a gimmick. However, Phil and his family can be visited year-round at the borough library in Punxsutawney. Groundhog Day is a cherished holiday in Pennsylvania, with various German communities holding annual banquets in honor of Phil.
Pennsylvania German culture and language are celebrated at these events, although some lodges have become defunct due to a decline in younger generations’ interest. Shapiro remains committed to defending Phil and the tradition, despite past mishaps involving other states’ groundhogs. Groundhog Day continues to hold significant value for Pennsylvanians, past and present, with Shapiro vowing to protect Phil’s special place in the state’s culture and history.
