Advocating for the Eastern Hellbender: Pennsylvania’s State Amphibian on the Brink of Endangerment

Press Release: Eastern Hellbender Protection Efforts Renewed in York County, PA

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — In a significant policy shift, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced plans to reconsider protective measures for the Eastern Hellbender, reversing a five-year decision that left the species without federal protection. This move comes in light of the Eastern Hellbender’s designation as Pennsylvania’s official state amphibian in 2019 and growing concerns about its declining habitat and population.

The Eastern Hellbender, North America’s largest salamander, serves as a crucial indicator of environmental health, particularly water quality. "If you see hellbenders in a creek or river, you know that the water quality is pretty good," stated Ted Evgeniadis, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper. These salamanders typically thrive in cold, fresh water environments, which makes them vulnerable to habitat degradation.

Over the years, various factors—including pollution and habitat loss—have significantly impacted the Eastern Hellbender’s natural range. “There are obviously quality issues that are devastating their population,” Evgeniadis noted, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.

The potential for renewed protections underlines the importance of the Eastern Hellbender not only to Pennsylvania’s ecosystem but also as a national indicator of healthy waterways. Wildlife advocates are hopeful that with this reassessment, steps will be taken to ensure the survival of the species, which can live up to 50 years under favorable conditions.

As conservation discussions progress, local stakeholders and environmental advocates are poised to push for stronger regulations that benefit the Eastern Hellbender, ensuring that it continues to thrive as a symbol of environmental health in Pennsylvania and beyond.
