"If you see hellbenders in a creek or river, you know that the water quality is pretty good," stated Ted Evgeniadis, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper. These salamanders typically thrive in cold, fresh water environments, which makes them vulnerable to habitat degradation.
Over the years, various factors—including pollution and habitat loss—have significantly impacted the Eastern Hellbender’s natural range. “There are obviously quality issues that are devastating their population,” Evgeniadis noted, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
