Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old scion of a prominent Maryland family, has shocked friends and family with his arrest for the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive Brian Thompson in New York City. Motivated by resentment towards health insurance companies, Mangione was allegedly found in possession of a gun, fake IDs, and a handwritten document expressing ill will towards corporate America.
Coming from a well-known Baltimore family involved in businesses such as country clubs and nursing homes, Mangione was a valedictorian at the prestigious Gilman School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in computer science. Despite this background, he had been struggling with chronic back pain that led him to leave his job as a data engineer and surfing community in Hawaii.
Friends and former roommates have described him as a smart and normal person who never complained about his health issues. However, he had posted on online platforms about his struggles with back pain and had an interest in books related to the topic. Furthermore, he had given a favorable review to the Unabomber manifesto, a text by Theodore Kaczynski who carried out a bombing campaign in the late 20th century.
