The Pennsylvania Political Science Association (PPSA) has made history by appointing Jeffrey Carroll, Ph.D., as its new president. Carroll is the first person of color to hold this position in the organization’s 85-year history. As an associate professor of political science and chair of the Center for Data & Society at Chestnut Hill College, Carroll is honored to continue the legacy of PPSA and hopes to advance political science in Pennsylvania.
Carroll’s involvement with PPSA began as a graduate student at Temple University in the mid-2000s. He has served in various roles within the organization, including as a conference attendee, presenter, panel chair, conference organizer, program chair, and published author in PPSA’s Commonwealth journal. Carroll’s dedication to PPSA led him to become the first vice president in 2022, a role in which he brought the Annual PPSA conference to Chestnut Hill College in April 2024.
Under Carroll’s leadership, CHC students had the opportunity to help plan and organize the conference, gaining valuable skills in the process. The conference featured presentations from top political science minds in the state and was attended by students, professors, and PA State Senator Sharif Street, who delivered the keynote address. Carroll hopes to continue engaging with the southeastern part of the state as president and emphasize the importance of year-round political engagement.
As the nation prepares to celebrate the 250th Semiquincentennial of the founding of the United States in 2026, Carroll sees an opportunity for PPSA to play a significant role in the celebrations. He aims to keep politics and policy at the forefront of discussions year-round, engaging educational leaders, community stakeholders, and students in meaningful conversations that impact civic health in the Commonwealth.
