Luigi Mangione, 26, was apprehended in Altoona, Pa as a suspect in the killing of the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare. He was well-educated, having attended the Gilman School in Baltimore and the University of Pennsylvania, where he co-founded a game development club. He also worked at Firaxis Games and TrueCar. Mangione had interned at Stanford University and lived in San Francisco and Honolulu.
Despite his successful background, Mangione had no known criminal record except for a citation for trespassing in Hawaii. Social media posts indicated he may have become isolated from his peers due to a spinal injury and surgery. A manifesto found with him mentioned UnitedHealthcare specifically and criticized health care companies for prioritizing profits over care.
The handwritten manifesto also mentioned apologizing for any distress caused but claimed the actions were necessary. Mangione was known for sharing quotes, book reviews, and reflections on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and Goodreads.
His family was described as prosperous because of real estate holdings and senior rehabilitation centers. Mangione’s online activity showed an interest in self-improvement and a nuanced view of controversial figures such as Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. The investigation into the case is ongoing, with contributions from various reporters and law enforcement officials.
