Police have arrested Luigi Mangione in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione has been charged with murder and other felonies in New York, as well as facing weapons and forgery charges in Pennsylvania. Police recovered bullet casings with the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” written on them, and handwritten papers found on Mangione suggested his motive for the shooting was ill will towards corporate America.
Thompson was shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4th and the alleged shooter fled the scene. Police later found a backpack with a jacket and fake money from a Monopoly game connected to the killing. Mangione was spotted in Altoona, Pennsylvania a few days later, acting suspiciously and carrying fraudulent IDs and a U.S. passport. He was arrested and charged with forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records, and other offenses in Pennsylvania. In New York City, Mangione faces charges of murder and four weapons felonies.
Detectives from the NYPD traveled to Altoona to interview Mangione, and further charges related to Thompson’s shooting will be determined by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The three-page document found on Mangione expressed his ill will towards corporate America and included no other targets. The investigation into Thompson’s killing is ongoing, with new information continually being updated.
