The Pennsylvania Senate race is heading towards a recount as the narrow margin between Republican Dave McCormick and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey triggers an automatic recount under state law. Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced that the unofficial results show a narrow race, with counties required to start the recount by Nov. 20 and finish by noon on Nov. 26. The results will be published on Nov. 27.
McCormick currently holds a narrow lead over Casey by just over 29,000 votes, triggering a recount as any margin under 0.5 percentage points requires one in Pennsylvania. McCormick’s spokeswoman has called his lead “insurmountable,” while Casey has not conceded, stating that there are still many votes to count.
Former President Donald Trump won Pennsylvania, but McCormack’s vote count shows a significant drop-off compared to Trump’s, with a gap of over 100,000 votes. Casey is trailing behind Vice President Kamala Harris by around 40,000 votes.
McCormack declared victory shortly after the election, stating that there is no path for Casey to surpass him. Senate Republicans have already secured the majority in the Senate, with victories in several key states. McCormick told reporters that he will respectfully move forward based on the election results.
NBC News did not yet project a winner in the Pennsylvania race. The recount will determine the final outcome of this closely watched Senate race.
