Eric Pree, a 55-year-old fugitive who escaped from federal prison in North California, has been caught and indicted after nearly eight years on the run. He was discovered missing from U.S. Penitentiary Atwater in January 2017 and was finally arrested in October in Walnut Creek. Pree was already serving a 101-month sentence for federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges when he escaped. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of several cellphones, ID cards, debit and credit cards in different names, numerous driver’s licenses, and a fake Harvard University student ID.
Pree has now been charged with one count of escaping from custody and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. He is back in federal custody to serve the remainder of his original sentence and is facing the new indictment for his escape. Authorities did not disclose how Pree managed to escape from prison. After almost eight years as a fugitive, investigators were able to track him down and bring him back into custody.
