President-elect Donald Trump stated in a recent interview that he cannot guarantee that American families will not pay more due to tariffs placed on the country’s trading partners, despite this being one of his main campaign promises. He disagreed with economists who say consumers pay the price of tariffs and emphasized his pre-Covid economic success. Additionally, Trump indicated he will not restrict abortion pills federally, plans to pardon Jan. 6 rioters on his first day back in office, and aims to deport all individuals in the U.S. illegally within the next four years.
Furthermore, he reiterated his intent to ban birthright citizenship via executive order and threaten to leave NATO if other member countries do not increase defense spending. Trump also stated that he will not order investigations into his opponents but believes members of the Jan. 6 committee should face jail time.
In terms of his nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, Trump expressed confidence in his abilities despite facing allegations such as sexual assault and excessive drinking. However, there is uncertain support for Hegseth’s confirmation in the Senate. It remains to be seen how Trump’s various campaign promises and policy decisions will play out as he prepares for his return to office.
