Pennsylvania’s Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, Launches Beer in Chicago | Business News

Yuengling Beer Finally Arrives in Illinois After 195-Year Wait

Chicago, IL – January 2024 – Pennsylvania’s Yuengling, the oldest brewery in the United States, is set to expand its reach to Illinois, marking a significant milestone in its slow journey westward. Starting late next month, beer enthusiasts in Chicago and across the Prairie State can finally enjoy Yuengling’s signature brews, which include Traditional Lager, Light Lager, Black & Tan, Golden Pilsner, and the newest upscale light beer, FLIGHT.

Founded in 1829 by German immigrant D.G. Yuengling in Pottsville, the brewery has long been a regional favorite, renowned for its family-owned legacy. Over the years, it has steadily expanded beyond its East Coast roots, recently joining forces with Chicago’s Molson Coors to facilitate distribution.

Wendy Yuengling, sixth-generation family owner, expressed excitement about the demand in Illinois, stating, "I think there’s definitely pent-up demand in markets that don’t have Yuengling." With 2.7 million barrels produced last year, the brewery is now the ninth largest beer supplier in the U.S., despite operating in only half the states and battling national giants like Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors.

The launch in Illinois comes at a time when Yuengling is capitalizing on market dynamics, especially following the sales decline of major competitors like Bud Light. To generate awareness, Yuengling plans to utilize various marketing strategies, including social media and in-store tastings, to connect with curious consumers.

As expectations run high among local fans, including members of a dedicated Facebook group anticipating this moment, Yuengling aims to make a significant impact in Illinois’ 7.4 million barrel beer market. For the company, building a successful presence in this state is a key step in its continued growth.
