Sarah Boone, a woman from Florida, has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for zipping her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., inside a suitcase and leaving him to die. The incident occurred in February 2020, following a night of drinking when Boone claimed the couple was playing a game of hide-and-seek. Boone told police that after an argument, she went to sleep believing Torres would be able to free himself from the suitcase. The next morning, she found him still inside and called 911.
During the sentencing hearing, Boone’s attorney argued for a lesser punishment, citing her remorse and claims of acting under “extreme duress” due to alleged physical and mental abuse by Torres. Boone herself addressed the court, describing the abuse she allegedly suffered at his hands. However, prosecutors argued that Boone knew Torres could not escape the suitcase and caused his death deliberately. Boone claimed she did not intend to kill Torres and was shocked to discover him dead the next morning.
Evidence presented during the trial included a video recorded by Boone showing Torres inside the suitcase, struggling to breathe while she laughed. Boone claimed she was trying to have a conversation with Torres to express her feelings. The autopsy revealed injuries on Torres’ hand and head, consistent with Boone’s account of the events. Boone’s attorney expressed disappointment with the verdict but indicated they respected the jury’s decision. Boone has 30 days to file an appeal.
