Thanksgiving Holiday Traffic Enforcement Data Revealed by Pennsylvania State Police
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) released alarming statistics regarding traffic crashes and enforcement during the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday travel period. From November 27 to December 1, seven fatalities were reported among 1,075 vehicle crashes, a significant increase from the four deaths recorded during the same period in 2023.
The report highlighted the dangers of impaired driving, with one fatality linked directly to an impaired driver and 64 additional crashes caused by drivers under the influence. In total, PSP arrested 552 individuals for driving under the influence (DUI), reflecting a slight increase from 542 DUI arrests in 2023.
The enforcement efforts were extensive, with over 7,770 speeding citations issued and 1,020 seat belt violations. The data indicated a worrying trend regarding child safety, with 124 arrests for failing to secure children in seat belts. Moreover, the total number of traffic violations surged to over 21,161, showcasing a significant law enforcement presence during the busy travel season.
Comparative statistics between 2024 and 2023 reveal that while the total number of crashes increased slightly, the number of fatalities rose sharply. In 2023, there were 979 crashes with only four fatalities.
Pennsylvania State Police emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during holiday periods when roadways are frequently congested. Authorities urge drivers to stay sober, buckle up, and ensure that children are safely secured in appropriate child safety seats.
