Pennsylvania Senate Race: What’s Happening?

Following weeks of uncertainty, Democratic Senator Bob Casey has officially conceded to his Republican challenger Dave McCormick in the Pennsylvania Senate race. The race had initially been called in favor of McCormick by the Associated Press, but Casey had held off on conceding, citing the need to count every vote. The slim margin between the two candidates triggered a statewide recount, with McCormick ultimately leading by a little over 16,000 votes.

The McCormick campaign had filed multiple lawsuits seeking to challenge the counting of certain ballots, including provisional and undated mail-in ballots. Despite this, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that ballots with date errors should not be counted in the race. McCormick had declared victory and began making appearances as Pennsylvania’s new senator-elect before Casey officially conceded on Thursday.

Casey expressed gratitude to those who worked to ensure every eligible vote was counted and acknowledged the close nature of the race. McCormick’s victory solidifies Republican control of both chambers of Congress as President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. Despite his defeat, Casey remained determined to ensure that every vote was counted before conceding to McCormick.
