Democratic Senator Bob Casey Jr. has yet to concede defeat in his race against Republican Dave McCormick, despite The Associated Press and other media outlets declaring McCormick the winner. In a video message, Casey stated that the democratic process will play out once all votes are counted. The incumbent senator is currently behind McCormick by 34,561 votes in Pennsylvania’s election results.
Casey thanked election workers for their diligent efforts in ensuring that Pennsylvanians’ voices are heard and expressed confidence in the American democratic process. McCormick, on the other hand, declared victory in Pittsburgh and thanked Casey and his family for their service to the commonwealth. He highlighted Casey’s father, a pro-life moderate who served as governor, for his honorable service.
Despite the AP calling the race for McCormick, there were still an estimated 91,000 votes outstanding at the time. The McCormick campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer initially stated that McCormick would not be welcome at new senator orientation, but later invited the Republican to participate. McCormick is set to attend orientation in the nation’s capital this week.
McCormick’s victory marks a political realignment in Pennsylvania, as the GOP gains momentum despite recent Democratic wins. The race between Casey and McCormick signifies a shift in the political landscape of the state.
