Central Pennsylvania Welcomes First Rain and Snowflakes of the Season in November 2024
November 2024 marks a significant shift in weather for central Pennsylvania, as the region experiences its first rainfall in over a month and sees the season’s initial snowflakes. The capital city, Harrisburg, received a total of 2.05 inches of rain, providing some relief from a worsening drought that has plagued the area. However, this month’s rainfall still fell short by nearly an inch below normal levels.
Despite experiencing the first hints of winter, November’s average temperatures remained unseasonably warm, averaging 57.7 degrees, almost four degrees above normal. This trend of higher temperatures aligns with a year that has been marked as the warmest on record in several Pennsylvania locations, including Harrisburg (58.8 degrees) and Williamsport (56.4 degrees). Rainfall deficits continue to be concerning, with areas in central Pennsylvania receiving 3 to 4 inches less than normal, while parts of suburban Philadelphia are behind by over 7 inches.
Looking ahead, this week’s forecast suggests a slight temperature moderation, with highs in the low 40s early in the week, dropping into the 30s by Friday. Initially, sunshine is expected, but a potential storm system may bring light snow from Wednesday into Thursday. AccuWeather also indicates the possibility of a more significant snowstorm around December 10.
In northwest Pennsylvania, Erie County has already faced substantial snowfall, with warnings in effect. Predictions suggest an additional 10 to 20 inches in northern Erie County and 12 to 24 inches in the southern region. The cumulative totals in some areas could reach up to 6 feet, significantly adding to the 40 to 60 inches already recorded in the past several days.
