Former NFL Referee Claims Officials Missed Call on Bengals’ Pick-Six During Steelers Victory

Press Article: Refereeing Controversy Overshadows Bengals-Steelers Game

In a contentious moment during the Bengals’ recent game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, former NFL referee Gene Steratore criticized officials for their handling of a pivotal play that led to a pick-six touchdown. The incident occurred when Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, while running a slant route, appeared to stumble and was subsequently yanked down by Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt by his helmet. This sequence resulted in Taylor-Britt intercepting a pass and scoring a touchdown.

Head referee Shawn Hochuli defended the officials’ decision, claiming that Pickens’ stumble constituted incidental contact, which was the rationale behind allowing the play to stand without a penalty. “If there was a potential grab or hold that was at an angle we couldn’t have seen,” Hochuli explained.

However, Steratore disagreed, asserting that the contact with the helmet should have warranted a penalty for illegal hands to the face, regardless of its severity. He emphasized that even minimal contact to the head of a receiver can violate rules and influence the play’s outcome. After the game, both Pickens and quarterback Russell Wilson expressed their belief that a penalty should have been called.

The officiating woes didn’t end there. The Bengals were also frustrated by a missed false start call on the Steelers, which they felt should have been ruled offsides, potentially resulting in a first down for Cincinnati.

This game’s officiating sparked debates among players and fans alike, highlighting the critical role that referees play in NFL matchups and the far-reaching impact of their decisions on game outcomes. As controversies continue to mount, calls for better officiating standards in the league intensify.
