President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister to head the Drug Enforcement Administration, a key role in the war against Mexican drug cartels and the trafficking of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Trump praised Chronister’s more than 32 years of experience in law enforcement and his dedication to keeping his community safe, as well as his credentials as a graduate of the FBI National Academy. If confirmed by the Senate, Chronister would replace President Joe Biden’s DEA administrator, Anne Milgram, who has been credited with aggressively combatting fentanyl trafficking.
Chronister expressed gratitude for the nomination, calling it the “honor of a lifetime” and emphasizing his commitment to serving the nation. He is known for his work on regional security task forces in Florida and his efforts to combat human trafficking. Trump also announced his pick for FBI director, Kashyap “Kash” Patel, signaling his intention to replace the current director, Christopher Wray.
The opioid crisis, including the trafficking of fentanyl from Mexico and China, has been a top priority for Trump, who sees it as a national security threat. As head of the DEA, Chronister would play a crucial role in efforts to interdict drugs, reduce demand among U.S. consumers, and increase treatment opportunities. Trump’s administration has pledged to take a tough stance on countries that do not cooperate in fighting drug trafficking and illegal immigration. The DEA, with its thousands of employees and multi-billion-dollar budget, plays a critical role in these efforts.
