LOWVILLE, N.Y. — A frigid deep freeze settled over parts of the U.S. this weekend, with heavy snowfall causing disruptions and creating winter paradise for snow lovers. The Tug Hill region of upstate New York saw astonishing snow totals, with some areas receiving up to 46 inches, prompting local business owner Kevin Tyo to emphasize the importance of caution for those less accustomed to severe winter conditions.
In Buffalo, the NFL’s Bills prepared for a snowy Sunday night game against the San Francisco 49ers, seeking snow shovelers to ensure the stadium was ready amid ongoing lake-effect snow. The State Weather Risk Communication Center anticipated variable snowfall totals depending on the storm’s trajectory near Orchard Park.
As Arctic air gripped the Northern Plains, temperatures plummeted 10 to 20 degrees below average, pushing dangerously cold air eastward. In Erie, Pennsylvania, heavy snow resulted in challenging conditions, with authorities reporting about 100 abandoned cars obstructing snow-clearing efforts. Both New York and Pennsylvania declared emergencies in response to the severe weather, as snowfall was expected to persist into Monday.
Meanwhile, Michigan faced its own challenges with lake-effect snow, particularly in the Upper Peninsula, where some areas were buried under nearly two feet. The impressive accumulation benefited ski resorts like Treetops Resort, which looks forward to a robust ski season.
As the snowfall continues, officials urge residents to stay informed and exercise caution, reinforcing that while winter offers beautiful landscapes, it also presents significant travel hazards.
