Newport Wrestling Poised for Another Strong Season
Newport wrestling continues to establish itself as a formidable force in high school sports, historically sending several athletes to postseason competition. Last season, the Buffaloes boasted an impressive 13-5 overall record, securing a fifth-place finish at the sectionals.
Senior Roman Polcha is set to lead the team this year after an impressive individual performance last season, finishing with a record of 36 wins and 12 losses. Polcha made significant strides, placing third at sectionals, fifth at districts, and seventh at regionals. However, the team will need to navigate the loss of graduated wrestlers Travis Lilly and Mason Messick.
With a 24-man roster that includes seven seniors, five juniors, five sophomores, and seven freshmen, Newport’s lineup appears to be well-rounded. Wrestlers like Marek Polcha, Kaj Miller, and Aiden Crockett are expected to contribute more significantly this season, having gained valuable experience last year despite not being regular starters.
The Buffaloes’ season kicks off on December 3 with a dual meet against Camp Hill, followed by participation in the Perry County tournament at West Perry on December 4. Newport will dive into league matches shortly thereafter, facing Line Mountain on December 11 and competing in the prestigious Carlisle Classic on December 13 and 14.
The busy schedule continues with matches against Juniata on December 18 and the annual holiday tournament on December 28. After a short break, Newport resumes competition in the new year with the Juniata pooled duals on January 4, followed by a series of league matches throughout the month.
The Buffaloes are eyeing postseason glory, with districts slated to begin on February 22. Newport wrestling remains a program to watch in the current season as they aim for continued success on the mat.
