Sam Benastick, a hiker who went missing in mid-October in the Canadian wilderness, was found alive earlier this week after being reported missing on Oct. 19. He was discovered by two men on the Redfern Lake trail and was transported to the hospital where his identity was confirmed. Benastick survived for several weeks by staying in his car for a couple of days, camping in different locations, and eventually flagging down the two men who rescued him.
Initially planning a 10-day trip in Redfern-Keily Park, British Columbia, Benastick ended up being in the remote area for 50 days. Over 100 local volunteers and officials aided in the search for him, with updates provided by his mother on social media. When he was found, he was suffering from frostbite and smoke inhalation but was alive and relatively well.
Redfern-Keily Park is a remote area with glaciers, waterfalls, meadows, and wildlife like grizzly bears and wolves. Hikers in the area can experience subzero temperatures and snowy conditions. The discovery of Benastick alive was a relief for authorities and loved ones, with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police expressing gratitude for the positive outcome.
