Governor Shapiro Declares Disaster Emergency Amid Lake-Effect Snowfall in Northwestern Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Following an intense lake-effect snowstorm that has dumped several feet of snow in northwestern Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro has signed a Proclamation of Disaster Emergency. This declaration enables the state to mobilize additional resources, including the Pennsylvania National Guard (PANG), to aid in response efforts, particularly in Erie County.
Governor Shapiro stated, "Our teams at PEMA, the Pennsylvania State Police, and PennDOT have been on the ground overnight to assist fellow Pennsylvanians as heavy snow impacts Erie County." The Governor has called in the National Guard to help stranded motorists and ensure emergency responders can reach those in need. He emphasized safety, urging individuals to stay off the roads unless necessary and to follow guidelines issued by local authorities.
The disaster declaration allows swift access to funds and resources for state agencies to support local governments grappling with the severe weather. Randy Padfield, Director of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), noted the storm’s broader implications, stating, "We are coordinating with partners in New York to expedite the reopening of affected highways."
Over a dozen members of the PANG are currently on active duty assisting with the emergency response, including deploying high-clearance vehicles to rescue stranded drivers. The Pennsylvania State Police reported nearly 200 incidents in just 24 hours due to the adverse conditions.
With forecasted additional snowfall this weekend, officials urge residents to prepare for challenging travel conditions. Motorists are advised to plan for delays, remain alert for changing weather conditions, and keep essential items like food, water, and warm clothing readily available.
