Barking Tree Farm Thrives, Thanks to Dedicated Farm Sitters
Centre County, PA – Linda Then and her wife, Sandy, are the proud owners of Barking Tree Farm, a vibrant animal sanctuary where they care for a menagerie that includes a Jersey steer, a Clydesdale, Nigerian dwarf goats, pot-bellied pigs, and several house pets. The couple relocated from Vermont several years ago, prioritizing the well-being of their animals and family connections.
However, life occasionally demands that the couple step away from their busy homestead, whether for weddings or personal crises, such as Sandy’s recent leg injury. To ensure their animals are well cared for during these absences, professional farm sitters have become vital to their operation. With Pennsylvania being home to countless family-owned farms, the demand for qualified sitters has surged.
Beth Stultz-Hairston, from Pet Sitters International, noted the growing trend, with 40% of their Pennsylvania members reporting experience caring for livestock. Local sitter Deanne George, who runs Dee’s Farm and Pet Sitting, explained how the demand for her services has intensified over the years. “Word of mouth got out, and now I’m busy year-round,” she said.
Joanna Taylor, who founded Mountain Pets after a long career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, emphasizes the importance of having experienced help for farm animals. Each client’s needs can vary widely, from handling medications to recognizing animal ailments. For the Then family, Taylor emerged as a “godsend,” providing essential support during tough times.
As farm sitters navigate busy seasons with numerous clients, their roles in Pennsylvania’s vibrant agricultural community prove indispensable for both farmers and their beloved animals.
