Bomb Threats Target Connecticut Democrats Amid Rising Political Tensions
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Thursday, five Democratic members of Congress from Connecticut received bomb threats at their homes, according to the lawmakers and their offices. The targeted officials include Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, John Larson, and Jahana Hayes. Thankfully, police investigations revealed no evidence of explosives at any of the residences.
The threat marked a troubling escalation in political violence, coming just a day after several prominent Cabinet picks by President-elect Donald Trump reported similar threats, including “swatting” incidents where false emergencies provoke law enforcement responses. Murphy’s office indicated that his Hartford home was specifically threatened in what appears to be a coordinated attack against multiple lawmakers and public figures.
Himes learned of the threat during a family Thanksgiving gathering and expressed gratitude toward local law enforcement for their swift actions to secure the area. He, along with other affected lawmakers, emphasized the need for peace and civility, stating, “There is no place for political violence in this country.”
Courtney’s home was threatened while his family was present, and Hayes was notified by the Wolcott Police Department of an email claiming a pipe bomb had been placed in her mailbox, which was later found to be unfounded.
The alarming incidents come on the heels of a tumultuous election season marked by violence, including attacks targeting political figures. Previous threats against a range of politicians, including Rep. Elise Stefanik and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, highlight the current climate of hostility. As these threats emerge, the call for unity and non-violence becomes increasingly urgent.
