Pennsylvania Shoppers Hunt for Last-Minute Thanksgiving Ingredients
Bala Cynwyd, PA – With Thanksgiving just around the corner, last-minute shoppers flooded the Acme supermarket on City Avenue Wednesday night, eager to gather final ingredients for their holiday feasts. Many shoppers reported seeing lower prices compared to last year, bringing some relief during this busy shopping season.
Felicia, a shopper picking up sweet potato pies, noted, "there are a lot of sales" this year. The American Farm Bureau Federation reported that the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for ten people is projected to be $58, a notable decrease from the 2022 high of $64. While some items like cranberries have seen a price increase of 16% and wine has gone up by 2%, the costs for traditional staples like pumpkin and green beans have decreased by over 9%.
The price of turkey, the centerpiece of many Thanksgiving meals, has also dropped significantly. At approximately $1.40 per pound, this year’s turkey costs are down 16% from last year and represent the lowest prices seen in five years.
Amidst the hustle and bustle, several shoppers were spotted with carts full of canned soda. Many took the opportunity to cross into Montgomery County to avoid the soda tax levied in Philadelphia, showcasing a tricky shopping strategy to save money.
As families prepare to celebrate, the combination of lower overall prices and savvy shopping tactics is set to make for a more budget-friendly Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania this year.
