The Fourth District Appellate Court has reversed the detention order of former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, charged in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson will soon be released with conditions determined at a hearing set for Monday. The court did not specify what the conditions would be, but they may include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued that he was not a flight risk due to health issues, but a judge had previously cited his callous behavior during and after the shooting. Massey, a Black woman, was shot in her home after calling 911 about a possible prowler. The incident led to a DOJ investigation into the sheriff’s office’s interactions with Black people and those with behavioral health disabilities. The attorney also mentioned other issues that need to be resolved before Grayson’s release, such as a potential appeal to the Illinois State Supreme Court. Grayson is currently held in the Macon County Jail.
