Heavy Lake Effect Snow Warning Issued for Northern and Southern Erie, Crawford County
In a pressing update, the National Weather Service has announced a lake effect snow warning set to take effect midnight Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday for Northern Erie, Southern Erie, and Crawford County. Meteorologists are forecasting significant snowfall accumulation between 6 to 18 inches, accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 35 mph.
Beginning Friday night, a multi-day lake effect snow event originating from Lake Erie will blanket the region with heavy snow bands, presenting snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. The National Weather Service has cautioned that poor visibility, potentially dropping to just one quarter of a mile, will pose dangerous travel conditions along major highways, including Interstates 90, 86, and 79. This hazardous weather will likely disrupt Friday’s morning and evening commutes, as well as other post-holiday travel plans.
Motorists are strongly advised to reconsider any travel plans during this warning period. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge drivers to comply with travel restrictions and to delay unnecessary travel. For those who must venture out, it is crucial to prepare an emergency kit for your vehicle, which should include items such as a flashlight, food, water, tire chains, and blankets.
Weather conditions can shift rapidly from heavy snowfall to dry weather within short distances, necessitating heightened awareness of visibility and road conditions. As lake effect snow is anticipated to return on Sunday and into the following week, additional winter weather advisories may be issued. Residents are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety during this challenging winter weather event.
