Winter Storm Watch Issued for Erie and Crawford Counties
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch effective from midnight Friday until 7 a.m. Monday for Northern Erie, Southern Erie, and Crawford County. Residents can expect significant snowfall, with accumulations potentially exceeding 8 inches due to heavy lake effect snow.
The forecast indicates a multi-day snow event beginning Friday, though the exact placement and timing of snow bands remain uncertain. Heavy snow bands may produce snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, leading to dangerously poor visibility, which could drop to as low as one quarter of a mile. This poses a serious risk for travel along Interstates 90, 86, and 79, particularly impacting Friday’s morning and evening commutes as well as post-holiday travel.
Travelers are urged to monitor updates from the NWS, consider delaying travel, and exercise extreme caution if travel is necessary. The NWS recommends carrying a winter storm kit, which should include items such as tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, and a first aid kit. Conditions can vary dramatically over short distances, so drivers should prepare for rapid changes in visibility and road conditions.
In light of the anticipated winter weather, the NWS offers safety tips for driving in icy conditions. It’s crucial to reduce speed, stay alert, and, when possible, avoid driving altogether. If one must venture out, plan routes away from trees and power lines. Should a vehicle become stranded, it is advised to stay with the car, remain calm, and signal for help.
By adhering to these safety recommendations, residents can enhance their chances of safe travel during the upcoming snowstorm.
