President-elect Donald Trump nominated retired Lt. Gen Keith Kellogg to be his Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, focusing on resolving the war Russia started. Kellogg served as chief of staff for the White House National Security Council during Trump’s first term and as national security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence. Kellogg has suggested that Ukraine must participate in peace talks with Russia to continue receiving aid and has mentioned the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO as well. Trump has expressed confidence in Kellogg’s ability to bring about peace through strength.
Some members of Trump’s administration, including Vice President-elect JD Vance and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, have questioned the level of assistance the United States should provide to Ukraine. However, Trump’s incoming White House national security adviser, Florida Rep. Michael Waltz, has advocated for tougher enforcement of energy sanctions on Russia and increased support for Ukraine. President Joe Biden appointed Bridget Brink as his ambassador to Ukraine, and has also focused on supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression through weapons and financial assistance.
Previously, Kurt Volker was the U.S. government’s envoy for ending Russia’s occupation of parts of Ukraine. Trump has expressed his intention to resolve the conflict quickly, while Biden has emphasized the importance of standing by Ukraine to prevent a wider war. Ultimately, the Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia will play a crucial role in working towards peace and stability in the region.
