Large Truck Collision Involves RV Carrying Snakes and Other Animals in Wilson County, N.C.
WILSON COUNTY, N.C. – In a bizarre accident early Tuesday morning, a large box truck collided with an RV transporting over two dozen snakes, tortoises, and other pets on Interstate 95. The crash occurred just past midnight near N. Springfield School Road, north of Kenly, as the RV was traveling from South Carolina to Pennsylvania.
Inside the RV were five occupants, along with a collection of 28 snakes, two tortoises, five bearded dragons, two dogs, and a cat. Thankfully, all human and animal passengers emerged unscathed, despite the chaos. A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper commented, "In 19 years, I’ve never seen anything like this."
The incident became particularly precarious when a small, venomous viper escaped during the collision. The RV’s owner managed to secure the snake before Emergency Medical Services arrived, expressing his concern for the safety of his animals amidst the situation. "I had some venomous snakes get loose, so I had to get them before the emergency personnel came in because I didn’t want to put them at risk," he noted.
The impact of the crash crushed the RV’s towed Jeep Cherokee, forcing it into the rear bedroom where one of the family’s sons was sleeping; fortunately, he was not seriously injured. However, the driver of the box truck sustained serious injuries and was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh. Authorities suspect that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, and it remains uncertain if he will face charges.
This unusual case highlights the unpredictability of road travel and the resilience of both people and pets.
