Boeing Announces Layoffs in Pennsylvania Amid Workforce Reduction Plans
The Boeing Company is set to lay off over 100 employees across Pennsylvania as part of a broader workforce reduction strategy. In a recent filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, Boeing notified officials of the impending layoffs affecting 101 workers at various locations: the Ridley Park facility at 300 Industrial Highway, as well as sites in North Union Township and Georges Township in Fayette County.
The layoffs are scheduled to commence on January 17, impacting workers at the three mentioned sites. This move is part of a larger plan by Boeing to reduce its workforce by approximately 10 percent, which translates to about 17,000 employees across multiple states, including Washington, Oregon, Colorado, South Carolina, Missouri, and Arizona.
Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, announced these plans in October, indicating that the company is adjusting its operational scale to align with current market demands. The layoffs in Pennsylvania are part of a total of 3,509 workers affected by this reduction nationwide, highlighting the challenges faced by the aerospace industry.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, employers are obligated to provide a 60-day notice ahead of mass layoffs, a requirement Boeing complied with in its notification dated November 17. The WARN Act seeks to protect employees, their families, and local communities from the abrupt impact of significant employment changes.
Boeing officials were not available for comment at the time of this report. As the company undergoes this transition, the implications for employees and the local economy remain a critical concern for stakeholders in the region.
