Hiker’s body found in White Mountains of New Hampshire

Christopher Huyler, 44, of Littleton, New Hampshire, went missing while hiking in the White Mountains Coppermine Trail. He had gone to check conditions of a ski glade prior to the winter skiing season. His wife reported him missing when he did not return home as expected. A search involving nearly two dozen rescuers was launched, and Huyler’s body was found at an elevation of 2,800 feet after a significant fall in icy terrain.

The rescuers faced challenging conditions while retrieving the body due to off-trail areas and thick vegetation. Huyler, described as an avid outdoor enthusiast, was well-equipped for the hike with micro spikes. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game department emphasized the importance of being prepared for winter conditions in the mountains and encouraged visitors to carry essential items such as a map, compass, warm clothing, and first aid kit. The agency also reminded hikers to take caution in the changing weather conditions.

This incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in outdoor activities, even for experienced hikers, and the necessity of being well-prepared for emergencies in remote locations.
