President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Ore., to lead the Labor Department. Chavez-DeRemer, who lost her reelection bid in November, has the support of Teamsters President Sean O’Brien and several Republican House colleagues. She has a history of working with both business and labor to support American workers and create opportunities for them. Chavez-DeRemer courted union endorsements in her previous race by highlighting her father’s union membership. She is committed to expanding training and apprenticeships, improving working conditions, and bringing back manufacturing jobs. She is also one of three Republican House cosponsors of the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, a pro-union bill. The Department of Labor oversees job safety rules, wage and hour standards, and unemployment insurance benefits. Trump is expected to instruct the new labor secretary to cut regulations seen as anti-business, including measures implemented under Biden to expand overtime pay eligibility, consider ESG factors in retirement investments, and extend labor organizing rights to seasonal agricultural workers. Chavez-DeRemer’s appointment reflects Trump’s pro-business agenda and focus on supporting American workers.
