Winter Weather Hits Sullivan County, PA: Safety Concerns Rise Amid Snowfall
Dushore, PA — The recent winter weather has brought a mix of conditions to Lycoming County and Sullivan County, with snow transforming the landscape in Sullivan County and keeping first responders on high alert. Newswatch 16’s Mackenzie Aucker took a journey from Hughesville, where bare roads and dull scenery prevailed, to the snow-laden roads of Sullivan County, where winter’s early arrival is causing challenges for residents and travelers alike.
Mark Carl, Assistant Fire Chief of Eagles Mere Volunteer Fire Company, reported a busy morning responding to downed trees, driven by the adverse weather. The snow created treacherous driving conditions, especially along Route 42, which saw a couple of tractor-trailers jackknife due to slick spots before plowing crews could clear the area. Rob DeFeo, a local resident, emphasized the need for caution, urging drivers to adapt to winter driving conditions and avoid rushing, as many are unprepared for the snow.
Despite the challenges, some residents, like William McKnight, expressed a desire for even heavier snowfall, reminiscing about winters past that brought several feet of snow. DeFeo highlighted his family’s enjoyment of the winter weather, stressing the importance of safety. He advised that adapting one’s driving habits—such as slowing down—is critical for navigating the icy roads.
As winter weather continues to evolve, local residents are encouraged to stay informed about traffic conditions via the WNEP Traffic Tracker page and to take necessary precautions while traveling in the snowy conditions.
