President-elect Donald Trump has named Sebastian Gorka, a conservative commentator who previously served in his administration, to a national security role. Gorka supported Trump’s ban on refugees from predominantly Muslim countries and will serve as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism. Despite being born in Britain to Hungarian parents, Trump described Gorka as a “legal immigrant” and a strong advocate for the America First Agenda. Gorka was forced out of the first Trump White House following changes in staff. Since leaving, he has hosted radio and television shows and was a regular commentator on Fox News.
Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton criticized Gorka, calling him a “con man” and questioning his education credentials in counterterrorism. Bolton expressed concern about Gorka’s appointment to a senior position in the National Security Council. In addition to Gorka, Trump also named Alex Wong as assistant to the president and principal deputy national security adviser. Wong previously served as deputy special representative for North Korea and the deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. These appointments come as Trump’s transition of power has yet to begin, despite the White House’s claims that agreements are in place.
