Governor Shapiro Appoints Darrell Clarke as Chairman of Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board

HARRISBURG, PA – Governor Josh Shapiro has appointed former Philadelphia City Councilman Darrell Clarke as the new chairman of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). Clarke, who has been a member of the board since his Senate confirmation in February, succeeds former U.S. Representative Tim Holden, whose term expired recently.

In his new role, Clarke acknowledges the longstanding mission of the PLCB, which has been instrumental in regulating the beverage alcohol industry in Pennsylvania for nearly 91 years. "For almost 91 years, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has worked to benefit the Commonwealth by regulating the beverage alcohol industry, serving as a responsible retailer and wholesaler, promoting responsible consumption and alcohol education, and generating significant dollars for state and local coffers,” he stated.

The PLCB plays a crucial role in overseeing around 600 state-operated liquor stores while also regulating approximately 20,000 liquor licenses statewide. Additionally, the board is committed to combatting underage drinking through collaborative efforts with schools, community organizations, and licensed establishments.

Clarke brings to the position a wealth of experience, having served on the Philadelphia City Council for 25 years, including a notable 12 years as council president before his retirement in 2024. His leadership is expected to continue advancing the board’s goals, particularly in promoting responsible alcohol consumption and generating revenue for Pennsylvania.

As Clarke steps into this prominent role, his extensive background in public service and commitment to community welfare are anticipated to enhance the PLCB’s initiatives and impact across the state.
