Senator Bob Casey Concedes to David McCormick in Tight Pennsylvania Senate Race
Senator Bob Casey has officially conceded to Republican challenger David McCormick in what has become one of Pennsylvania’s most closely contested Senate races. In a video posted on social media platform X, Casey expressed his congratulations to McCormick for winning the election: “I just called Dave McCormick to congratulate him on his election to represent the people of Pennsylvania in the US Senate." Casey, a Democrat who has held the seat since 2006, was unable to overcome McCormick’s campaign momentum.
The Associated Press declared McCormick the winner earlier this month, but a recount was necessary due to the razor-thin margin of victory, which fell below 0.5%. Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Secretary, Al Schmidt, noted that this marks the eighth time since 2004 that a recount provision has been triggered in the state. McCormick, a former CEO of Bridgewater Associates, previously ran in the 2022 Republican primary but lost to Mehmet Oz, who ultimately fell to Casey.
This election saw McCormick capitalize on significant support from the Republican base, buoyed by enthusiasm for former President Donald Trump and considerable financial backing from billionaire donors. Meanwhile, Casey and his supporters attempted to portray McCormick as disconnected from Pennsylvania, emphasizing his late-in-life relocation to Pittsburgh in 2021. Conversely, McCormick’s team leveraged criticism of Casey, branding him as out of touch with everyday Pennsylvanians, particularly due to his support of President Biden’s economic policies.
With the election outcome now confirmed, McCormick is set to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
