Dave McCormick defeats Bob Casey in Pennsylvania Senate race

In a closely contested race for Pennsylvania’s Senate seat, Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., conceded to his Republican opponent, Dave McCormick. The GOP’s victory in this battleground state further solidified their Senate majority. McCormick expressed gratitude to Casey and vowed to serve every Pennsylvanian in the Senate. The slim margin triggered an automatic recount, which was halted following Casey’s concession. Despite hopes raised by outstanding provisional ballots, Casey ultimately conceded after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered election officials to stop counting certain mail-in ballots. With 99.8% of expected votes counted, McCormick secured 48.8% of the vote compared to Casey’s 48.6%, with a difference of just over 16,000 votes.

McCormick’s win contributes to the Republican majority in the Senate, giving them a 53-47 seat advantage in the next Congress. This victory could facilitate the confirmation of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks. With Republicans set to control the White House and both chambers of Congress in January, McCormick’s win represents a significant shift in the political landscape. NBC News politics reporter Megan Lebowitz covered the concession, with contributions from Frank Thorp V and Julie Tsirkin.
