After a closely contested 2024 Senate race in Pennsylvania, U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. has conceded defeat to his Republican opponent, Wall Street hedge fund manager David McCormick, who claimed victory by a margin of .24 percentage points. Casey’s concession came after a statewide recount triggered by a margin less than 0.5 percentage points between the two leading candidates. In a video statement, Casey thanked the people of Pennsylvania for granting him the privilege of serving them for 28 consecutive years in public office.
McCormick responded by thanking Casey for his years of service and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent every citizen in Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate. The 2024 Senate race marked the end of an 18-year tenure in the Senate for Casey, as well as the Casey family’s 36-year presence in statewide office. McCormick’s victory gives President-elect Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party a 53-47 majority in the Senate for the 2025-26 session of Congress, along with a narrow GOP majority in the U.S House of Representatives.
The race made state political history due to the closest percentage margin of difference between the top two candidates in a Pennsylvania Senate race since elected senators began in the early 20th century. The outcome signifies a significant shift in Pennsylvania’s political landscape and will be formalized when McCormick is sworn into office on Jan. 3 at the U.S. Capitol.
