Pennsylvania Commemorates Transgender Day of Remembrance Amidst Ongoing Challenges
HARRISBURG, PA – State officials and LGBTQ advocates gathered in the capitol on Wednesday for the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a solemn event honoring the lives lost to violence and discrimination over the past year. Launched in 1999, this observance highlights the alarming trend of violence against transgender individuals and emphasizes the need for political action, especially following recent elections.
Val Arkoosh, the Secretary of Human Services, expressed resolve in protecting the transgender community, stating, "The loss of even one transgender person’s life to violence or to suicide is one life too many." According to the Human Rights Campaign, 36 transgender Americans were killed in the last year, with the tragic number rising to 63 when including suicides and other violent deaths, four of which occurred in Pennsylvania.
The memorial service included remarks from family members of victims, including Malinda Harnish Clatterbuck, who spoke about her son, Ashton Myles Clatterbuck, a community activist who died by suicide. She attributed his death to societal failures and increasing anti-trans policies. Recent elections and the newly elected Republican-led Congress continue to stoke fears within the LGBTQ community.
In response, Rep. Izzy Smith-Wade-El highlighted ongoing legislative efforts, including a proposal for gender-neutral restrooms in schools. While House Democrats plan to reintroduce bills to bolster LGBTQ protections, obstacles remain in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Additionally, actions taken by Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration aim to dismantle harmful practices like "conversion therapy," with ongoing discussions surrounding policies affecting transgender individuals.
The importance of legislative support and socio-cultural change was stressed throughout the event, with community leaders vowing to continue the fight for equality and protections for all Pennsylvanians.
