In a significant show of support for Hurricane Helene relief efforts in Western North Carolina, Taiwan has contributed $300,000 to the N.C. Disaster Relief Fund. This fund, created for disaster recovery, is administered by the United Way and distributes donations to local organizations assisting impacted communities.
On October 12, Taiwan announced a total commitment of $800,000 to aid recovery in North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia, following the destructive storm. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in Atlanta and Miami coordinated the donations, which include $300,000 for Florida and $200,000 for Georgia.
Yi-Lung Wang, director general of Taiwan’s Atlanta office, expressed the shared struggles between Taiwan and the affected states, stating, “Taiwan has experienced similar tragedies and understands the profound sense of loss that follows typhoons and earthquakes.” Wang emphasized Taiwan’s solidarity with North Carolina in its recovery efforts.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper acknowledged the donation and highlighted the determination of North Carolinians to rebuild. He noted it is “heartwarming” to receive Taiwan’s support, which reflects a global acknowledgment of the state’s plight.
The N.C. Disaster Relief Fund was established after Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and has since been activated during subsequent disasters, including Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence. The fund has raised nearly $11.5 million for survivors of Hurricane Helene, with over 20 local nonprofits benefiting from grants designed to meet immediate needs such as food, water, and cleaning supplies.
For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made through the state’s official website or sent directly to the N.C. Disaster Relief Fund in Raleigh.
