Pennsylvania Takes Major Steps to Enhance Maternal Health Care
Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed a significant bill aimed at improving maternal health care in Pennsylvania, with another related measure poised for his signature. The newly enacted law establishes a statewide campaign to raise awareness about postpartum depression, addressing a critical issue affecting many new mothers. Additionally, a pending bill seeks to enable doulas — trained nonmedical support personnel for pregnant individuals — to receive Medicaid reimbursement, thereby expanding access to these vital services.
State Representative Gina Curry, co-chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, advocated for these bills as part of a comprehensive "Momnibus" initiative aimed at enhancing maternal care. In a recent interview, Curry reflected on her own experiences as a mother and legislator, discussing the challenges of balancing these roles, especially following the loss of her husband.
Curry emphasized the importance of government involvement in supporting families, particularly in light of alarming maternal mortality statistics. “With 107 deaths reported in 2020, we must reduce these preventable fatalities,” she stressed. Collaborative efforts among various health departments aim to address this grave issue in Pennsylvania.
Despite broad support for maternal health initiatives, not all proposed bills have progressed. Curry highlighted the need for measures such as insurance coverage for at-home blood pressure monitors, essential for monitoring women’s health post-delivery. She advocates for equitable access to resources, pointing out that even those who can afford them should receive postpartum support items.
Curry concluded by underscoring the critical need for consensus on maternal health legislation, as everyone has a role in ensuring the well-being of mothers and families. As Pennsylvania moves forward, it is clear that improving maternal health remains a top priority for its leaders.
