Contemplative Citizenship: Rev. David Peck’s Initiative to Foster Dialogue Amid Election Tensions
Lancaster, PA — As divisions deepen in communities nationwide in light of a contentious presidential campaign, Rev. David Peck is taking action to bridge gaps through spiritual practice. The rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Peck previously served as an Anglican church representative in Africa, witnessing how faith communities can exacerbate conflicts but also bring about healing.
Amid heightened election anxieties and political strife, Peck believes that common spiritual traditions can guide individuals towards reconciliation. “We have the best tools in spiritual traditions to confront these conflicts,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a thoughtful approach to engaging with differing viewpoints.
To cultivate this environment, Peck has launched a weekly series called “Contemplative Citizenship,” designed to help participants harness ancient techniques of meditation and prayer. In the tranquil ambiance of the church sanctuary, he recently led a guided meditation engaging around 50 attendees from various faith backgrounds, addressing their fears and frustrations linked to the election.
His session emphasized the importance of a contemplative citizenry, capable of self-reflection and humility in the face of differing opinions. Participants practiced prayers, including the Jesus Prayer and various mantras, aimed at nurturing a calm response to conflict. Attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue in contrast to the vitriolic discourse dominating political discussions today.
Listening to the poignant words of both scripture and the Rolling Stones, Peck reminded participants that recognizing faults within themselves is crucial to healing societal divides. As America braces for potential conflict surrounding the election, Peck’s initiative offers a hopeful pathway—rooted in spirituality—to foster understanding and solidarity. “Now more than ever, we need methods that bring us together,” noted participant Timothea Kirchner, reflecting a collective yearning for peace amid turmoil.
