Grammy-winning singer John Legend returned to his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, to campaign alongside Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in a last-ditch effort to mobilize voters in Pennsylvania. Legend joined a star-studded list of celebrities, including Beyoncé and Usher, who have hit the campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats in the final days leading up to the election.
Legend and Casey visited two Black churches in Philadelphia before speaking at a canvassing event with Rep. Jim Clyburn and Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Legend emphasized the importance of Pennsylvania’s voice in the election and encouraged all residents to get out and vote.
When asked about the impact of celebrity endorsements like his own, Legend stressed that the focus should ultimately be on the candidates and their plans for the country, rather than the endorsements themselves. He expressed confidence that Harris, Casey, and others have strong visions for the nation’s future.
Legend also addressed personal issues close to his heart, such as abortion rights, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all women have the freedom to make decisions about their reproductive care. On the topic of Black male voters potentially shifting towards the Republican Party, Legend expressed belief that they will make the right decision to protect their families and communities.
By lending his support to Sen. Casey in Pennsylvania, Legend highlighted the senator’s track record of fighting for the people, particularly on issues like women’s rights and voting rights. Legend stressed the importance of a supportive Senate for any president, including a potential President Harris, to enact their agenda effectively.
